How to build a windows 8 app - all that nerdy stuf

How to: Build a Windows 8 App

Build a Windows 8 App using free tools provided by Microsoft

Microsoft appears to be taking a different route than Apple when it comes to creating and selling apps.  When Apple’s app store first opened, I (and probably you) spent hours going through apps, looking at the free ones, the ones that were replacements for websites/tools I already used, games for myself, apps to occupy my daughter…. well, just about everything.  And while, at first, it seemed like most of these apps were made by big companies, I slowly discovered there were a lot of independent publishers out there.  You probably know a few – the friend of a friend who made an app, naively hoping to strike it rich.  For me, it was my cousin Andy, who released a few apps under Smooth Landon, while other creations of his were rejected.  My personal favorite was probably a bobble-head Obama, which Apple rejected for being a negative caricature of a politician, or some other ridiculous crap.  But I digress…. while Apple’s apps reach millions of users, the Metro / Modern UI apps for Windows 8 will hit a much, much larger audience.  And Microsoft wants to teach you how to build a Windows 8 app – for free.

Yes, free.  Microsoft has released everything you need to make your own Metro / Modern UI style app for Windows 8.  All of the tools, and even the developer’s license, are available for free.  Keep reading to find out how and where to get them.

Mission: Small Business – about grants or gaining customers?

Is Mission: Small Business out to help small businesses, or to find new customers for Chase and Living Social?

By now, most of you have seen the Facebook posts for Mission: Small Business.  The idea behind the campaign is that up to twelve small businesses can receive grants of $250,000 to expand their company.  To be fair, the business that helped with this website, Ogre Techs, is in the running for one of the grants.  We’ve received at least a half dozen requests from different companies to help support their business.  When we went to vote, we noticed the advantage for the sponsors.

In order to have a chance of receiving the grant, a company needs at least 250 votes by the end of June.  The competition is open to any small business in the U.S. that meets a few general qualifications.  There are literally thousands of businesses competing, if not tens or even hundreds of thousands.  The site does not allow you to see the essay that each company had to write to apply for the competition.  It does show the number of votes each company has received to date.

Here’s where it gets interesting.  The vast majority of companies listed are not going to gather 250 votes.  Not even close.  Most companies appear to have less than 25 votes.  These companies have no chance of being eligible to receive the $250,000 grant. Read on after the break for more details!

$99 Xbox 360 + $15 Subscription Expands to Best Buy, Gamestop

A few weeks ago Microsoft announced a new deal for Xbox 360. For $99 upfront and $15 a month, the Microsoft Store offered an Xbox 360 4GB Kinect system, including 2 years of Xbox Live. Today, Microsoft announced that by the end of this month the program will extend to all US Best Buy locations and “select” Gamestop locations.

I guess that means it’s something of a success so far, or why bother extending the program’s reach? Hit the source link for details.
