Photoshop Gets Better for Free with Google Nik
Plugins. If you’re not familiar with them, Google Nik is a great place to start. The comprehensive set of Photoshop plugins offered in the Nik suite enable a pretty nice range of functionality, spread across seven distinct plugins. Purchased in 2012, Google today announced that the entire suite of Nik plugins would be free from here on out, and further, that people who bought them in 2016 can apply for a refund. Pretty sweet deal. In all likelihood, these plugins will be discontinued or at least, not updated for too much longer, but don’t let that get you down. Typically, Photoshop plugins remain compatible for many generations of the software.
The Nik suite starts off with Analog EFEX Pro, which lets you “explore the look and feel of vintage cameras and lenses” with your modern images.
It continues with Color EFEX Pro, “a comprehensive set of filters for color correction, retouching and creative effects” that should help make your images really come alive.
Then there’s Silver Efex Pro, which is designed to “master the art of black and white photography with darkroom inspired controls”.
Moving on, there’s Viveza, a plugin to “selectively adjust the color and tonality of your images without complicated masks or selections”. This one should appeal to just about anyone with a penchant for posting their snazzy pics on Instagram.
HDR Efex Pro, as the name implies, looks to help you “explore the full potential of HDR Photography”. If you’re into taking advantage of dynamic range, this might be just what you’re looking for!
Sharpener Pro is design to help “bring out the hidden details consistently with the professional’s choice for image sharpening”.
Last but not least, there is DFine, which offers to “improve your images with noise reduction tailored to your camera”. It lets you adjust contrast and noise reduction with separate controls and offers profiles for various kinds of cameras.
Wait, you’re still here? Go get them! Then come back and tell us what you think about your shiny new Photoshop enhancements in the comments!
