How to Make a Bootable Windows 10 USB Drive

Install Clean with a Windows 10 USB Drive

In my first Windows 10 post yesterday, I callously pointed you toward Microsoft’s free tool for downloading and creating a Windows 10 USB Drive. So mean, I know. But today is July 29th, 2015, and that can only mean one thing: Windows 10 is loosed upon the world, and it’s about time you got your nerd on and installed it. Of course, no self respecting nerd does an in-place upgrade, right?

Today, I show you how to get your very own legal, legitimate Windows 10 USB Drive, complete with screenshots aplenty in ATNS’s quick tutorial. You can also use these steps to make a bootable DVD if you prefer. The first step is to download Microsoft’s tool (shut up), and the rest will follow in a gallery below, now with 100% more screenshots! Don’t worry, this is really, really easy. Just in case you can’t see the images for some reason, the steps are here in text, too.

Step 1: Download the Windows 10 Media Download Tool.

Step 2: Save it somewhere easy to find, like your desktop or the Downloads folder.

Step 3: Select the “Create Installation Media for Another PC” Option.

Step 4: Choose your language and architecture type. I chose both 32 and 64 bit, but you can choose for yourself. Be sure you choose the right EDITION! Home and Pro are different!

Step 5: Choose your media. I chose USB, but you can pick DVD if you prefer. For this tutorial, we’re going USB, but the steps are almost identical.

Step 6: Choose your USB drive. Obviously, you should already have plugged it in. It WILL be erased, so be sure it’s either empty or you backed it up.

Step 7: Wait while the Windows 10 files download. Depending on your connection, this might take awhile.

Step 8: The tool will automatically begin creating your Windows 10 Bootable USB Media. Just hold on while it does its thing.

Step 9: Marvel in awe at your own awesomeness and Microsoft’s nerd prowess. You can now install Windows 10 fresh and clean!

And that’s really all there is to it. Have a problem? Let me know in the comments and I’ll see what I can do to help!
