Nintendo Reveals Amiibos, Your Wii U’s new Amigos!
During their E3 2014 digital press conference, Nintendo revealed a new category of product for your Wii U: the Amiibo. These are a new set of NFC-based figurines that can link with the Wii U. Also, thanks to a forthcoming adapter, Amiibos will work with Nintendo 3DS and 2DS. Want to see how they work and what games they’ll be compatible with? Hit the break and feast your ojos!
Available characters, from prototypes we’ve seen, include a wide variety. Among them are Marth from Fire Emblem, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Link, Zelda, Pikachu, Starfox, Mario, Samus Aran, a boy from Animal Crossing, Princess Peach, Kirby, Pitt from Kid Icarus, and the female trainer from Wii Fit. From the picture above, it looks like there are many possibilities coming between now and December, including Luigi, Bowser, and multiple colors or kinds of Pikmin.
Each Amiibo will link to your Wii U just by a touch of the gamepad. Once activated, the character figurines will store statistics and custom move sets that can be used in-game. Want to play your Level 50 character at a friend’s house? Just pick up the Amiibo and take it along with you. Even though you and a friend might both be playing as Link or Mario, you’ll each have your own set of abilities and skills.
The Amiibos are set to launch with Super Smash Bros. when it comes out later this year. They will also be incorporated into the recently released Mario Kart 8, and into future releases including Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Mario Party 10, and Yoshi’s Woolly World.
The Nintendo competitor to Skylanders and Disney Infinity will be available this holiday season. Expect a whole new set of figurines to be marching across your kid’s video game console soon!
