Well, if all you're looking to do is stream video, WHS is definitely not the right product for you! :). However, if you're looking to centralize backups for all the PC's on your home network, establish a centralized file repository for all users and create a web accessible interface for your network's personal files, WHS will fulfill those needs very easily and effectively, whereas TVersity doesn't perform any of those roles.

I'd be curious though, if you know of another product that CAN do those things but is open source or freeware?

Thanks for the talkback, glad to see some participation :)

Don’t waste your time with WHS- Use the free program TVersity

I have been using WHS for about a year now and to be honest it’s another semi- useless half baked streaming media server; I say another because it seems now that every major hard drive manufacturer has some offering that plays a handful of media types, but 90% of them will not play mkv file, the format we all use for HI-DEF recordings. I don’t know how many hours I have spent converting AVI, MKV,,Mov,Mp4 etc, etc to (H.264) the only format WHS will play reliably without issue. Some months I came across Tversity (http://tversity.com/ ) media server, the base product is free the pro version is under $40 and it plays all media types including mkv, it can also stream TV. In a nut shell this product rocks! Again the base product is free, pro gets you the ability to stream TV, something I don’t do but a product this good deserves my personal financial support, give it a try you will not be sorry.
